Food is not just calories.
It is not just fuel.
It is information for the body.
It influences our energy, our gut health, our hormones, our immune system, our mood, and our long-term resilience.
But here’s the part that is often missing:
the quality of that food begins long before it reaches our plate.
It begins in the soil.
In how the land is cared for.
In how animals are raised.
In how food is grown, harvested, stored, and transported.
Modern food systems have prioritised convenience, scale, and uniformity - often at the expense of nutrient density and vitality.
Which means that even when we think we are “eating well”, we may still not be getting the nourishment our bodies truly need.
This is why the idea of food as medicine matters so deeply.
Because when food is grown well, sourced well, and eaten in its most natural and seasonal form, it becomes one of the most powerful ways to support health, energy, and vitality.
What is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is an approach to healthcare that looks beyond symptoms and asks a deeper question:
Why is this happening in the first place?
Rather than simply managing symptoms, it focuses on understanding the root causes of imbalance in the body.
It recognises that everything is connected:
● Digestion
● Hormones
● Blood sugar
● Inflammation
● The nervous system
● Lifestyle and environment
And at the center of all of this sits one of the most influential inputs we have:
Food.
Food affects every system in the body.
It can stabilise blood sugar or disrupt it.
Support the gut microbiome or deplete it.
Reduce inflammation or contribute to it.
This is why food is such a central pillar of functional medicine.
Not as restriction.
Not as rules.
But as a powerful, practical, everyday way of supporting how the body functions and feels.
Hi, I’m Dr Margriet.
I’m a medical doctor with over 30 years of clinical experience, and I now specialise in functional medicine. © Dr Margriet Health 2026.
Over the years, I’ve seen how many people are struggling with low energy, poor sleep, digestive issues, hormonal changes, and a general sense of not feeling their best. And again and again, I come back to the same place: food has an extraordinary ability to support the body — when it is the right kind of food.
Not just food that is labelled healthy. But food that is grown with care, rooted in healthy soil, seasonal, and nutrient-dense. That’s why I feel so proud to be partnering with Annabel, Will, and the team here at Grange Farm. Because what they are doing goes far beyond simply selling produce. There is a deep care for the land. For the soil. For how food is grown and raised. And that directly translates into the quality of the food — and ultimately, into the health of the people who eat it.
Together, we are bringing something to the farm shop that feels both simple and deeply needed: helping people reconnect food with their health. Through the Food as Medicine series, we’ll be sharing practical, accessible ways to use real, seasonal food to support your energy, your wellbeing, and your long-term health. Not in a complicated or overwhelming way. But in a way that feels grounded, doable, and genuinely supportive of real life.
Because when you understand how food supports your body… everything begins to change.
When we care for the land, we grow food that can better care for us. And when we reconnect with that food, we reconnect with our own health. Better soil. Better food. Better health.
